Berlin: Kiezeklein

kiezeklein

Always on the lookout for new cafes and working spots, I came across Kiezeklein, a tiny cafe located on Heinrichplatz in Kreuzberg. Based on the description of “klein aber fein,” I was expecting something cozy and quiet and tucked away. This couldn’t be further from the truth.

While the interior of the cafe is small and welcoming, it’s also very popular. There are four tables/benches inside where people can sit and chat or work, and there are a handful of tables outside on the sidewalk. When I visited, it was a perfect spring day, if not a bit windy, and the front door was open, with plenty of foot traffic in and out. In fact, it seemed that the majority of Kiezeklein’s customers are people who pass by and stop in for a coffee to go or a quick snack. This contributed a lively atmosphere to the place.

The coffee was fine, and there are plenty of other drink selections available. There’s also a counter with various cakes and breads, and a display case with salads and more baked goods. The vegan options are slim to none, but I picked one of the prepackaged couscous salads, which was a filling snack.

As for me, I hung out and worked for an hour, but I have to admit that if you want to do serious work, this is not the place. The atmosphere is much more conducive for those wanting to people watch, casually surf the Internet, or just hang out with friends and catch up.
