Last summer, I went to visit a friend in Finland, and opted to fly there using Air Baltic. And since my flight was two legs, Berlin to Riga and Riga to Helsinki, I took advantage of this layover and made my return trip take all day, which gave me roughly eight hours in Riga. Since I arrived in the morning, shortly after 8 a.m., the city was still quiet, and I was able to wander through the very touristy Old Town without coming across too many people. Of course, with such a short amount of time in the city, my main goal was to cover as much ground as possible on foot, while taking photos of the famed Art Nouveau architecture, which is juxtaposed against remnants of Soviet occupation and the run-down facades of many of its buildings.
