Arboga: Summer 1994

scan0054

The first time I ever went to Europe was in 1994. I was 10, and my family flew to Scandinavia to spend a month living and traveling through Sweden and Norway. During our time there, we saw and did a lot, but our home base was in Arboga, which is where my brother (the one who lives in Gothenburg) lived.

Arboga is about 90 minutes away from Stockholm and was the home of the Vasa royal family in the past. It’s been inhabited for more than 1,000 years, and today has a population of around 10,000 people.

The city itself is cute, though not exactly bustling with life, which means we took a lot of day trips in the area, mostly notably to the lake. But there still were a few things to see, such as Arbogaån (the Arboga River), the Heliga Trefaldighets kyrka (Holy Trinity Church), the Nordic headquarters of the Jehovah’s Witnesses (which has since moved to Denmark), a local museum/city archive, and a brewery museum (not of interest at the time, though I wouldn’t mind checking it out now). We also spent some time at the library and visiting the police station.

Here are some photos from our first few days in town exploring the city and hanging out with the Swedes. Also, be sure to check out that awesome mid-90s style. We all looked so cool.
