Anyone who has traveled with Berlin’s public transportation can likely attest to the diversity of design at the stations. Some are absolutely beautiful, others are simply functional but not particularly lovely, and yet others have fallen into disrepair.
One of the more interesting stations I have recently come across is Sophie-Charlotte-Platz, located out in Charlottenburg. In the late 1980s, the station received a series of 26 paintings that line the walls on either sides of the tracks. Each painting depicts the “history” of Berlin’s U-Bahn stations.
The art itself is somewhat simple, but it’s fun to admire the pictures and try and figure out which one is which station. There is also a fantastic old-school map (below) of the lines. While aesthetically it’s not the most wonderful station in Berlin, Sophie-Charlotte-Platz is a charming tribute to Berlin’s underground.
