Berlin: Chapter One Coffee

chapter one coffee

I really love coffee. I started drinking it sometime around age 12 or so, when I would spend the mornings sipping a cup alongside my bowl of Cheerios, while I read the newspaper. Since then, it’s become a part of my morning routine not only for the kickstart to my day, but also because of the comfort a cup of coffee can provide.

But for some people, coffee isn’t just a thing to love; it’s a driving force. And nowhere is that so evident as at Chapter One Coffee in Kreuzberg. It’s a small spot, but it packs quite a punch. The baristas are passionate about what they do and it’s completely evident how seriously they take their art. Not only that, there isn’t a hint of condescension when they talk about coffee with customers, because they want everyone to understand and enjoy it as much as they do.

The coffees here are all lighter, but I tend to like darker, richer tastes, so I told the barista, Björn, who suggested one for me. I went with it and wasn’t disappointed, though based on the descriptions (below) they all sounded appealing.

Disclaimer: For those who are looking for a cafe to wile away time on the Internet, this is not it. There is no WiFi here, and the space itself is not large enough to accommodate more than a handful of people at a time anyway. Instead, Chapter One is where you go if you want to get a coffee to enjoy outside on the streets of Bergmannkiez, or if you want to sit and read a book while sipping your drink, or if you want to catch up with an old friend for a bit.
