Gothenburg: Lilla Delsjön

lilla delsjön

If any of you have experienced a Silvester (New Year’s Eve) in Berlin before, you probably wouldn’t be surprised that we wanted to get the hell out of dodge this year. After three years of celebrating in the city, I am so completely sick of the straight-up warzone climate, so instead we headed north to Sweden for a few days.

New Year’s Eve was a fun event full of good food and company, and after sleeping in on January 1, we decided to take advantage of the not-rainy weather and head out to a nearby lake. This is how we ended up at Lilla Delsjön.

The lake, along with its companion larger lake, Stora Delsjön, is the source of Gothenburg’s drinking water. It’s also a pretty popular destination regardless of how cold it is.

We parked in the nearby lot, then began the kilometer-or-so-long hike down to the water. Along the way, we passed a little cottage that normally serves food and drinks but happened to be closed due to the holiday. No problem, because we brought our own food!

Upon reaching the waterfront, we came across a wooden hut-like structure. Inside was grill with a fire and about half a dozen families had brought hot dogs and marshmallows to grill. The guys did most of the grilling for our dogs, though ours took a bit longer since M. and I had veggie dogs, which for some reason, are only sold frozen in the grocery store. Still, it was worth the wait, and between the two of us, we polished off our six dogs in no time.

We also wandered around, and although it was cold, it was still above 0, which means that it’s not unbearable. We actually ended up being the last people to leave, around 3pm when the sun began to set. I would love to go back to the lakes, perhaps when it’s a bit warmer, and take the entire 9.5-kilometer trek around them.
