August is a busy month in our household, namely because it seems as though half the people we know were born during this month (including M.), so we’re always going to get-togethers or BBQs to celebrate. Plus it’s also a good month for enjoy the tail end of Berlin summer… Add to the fact that our wedding anniversary is smack dab in the middle, and it makes for a lot of fun times.
Last August happened to be our first wedding anniversary, and that, combined with M.’s birthday two weeks later, I wanted to do something special to surprise him. First I thought of doing a staycation in Berlin, somewhere far out west, but most of the hotels that were fancy enough for my liking were either booked out or required multiple day stays but only had the expensive suites leftover. I didn’t really want to travel too far away, but I looked a bit further afield in Brandenburg and eventually settled upon visiting the Spreewald.
So off to Lübben we went. I managed to snag that last room available at Strandhaus Spreewald, a relatively new four-star wellness hotel that looked like the perfect picture of relaxation. And relaxing it was. After a 45-minute train ride southeast, we arrived in the little town of Lübben and took a short walk to the city center, where the hotel was located. Check-in was a breeze, and we were escorted to our room, which was (especially by European standards) big—huge, comfy bed, a sitting area with a small sofa and TV, plenty of storage, and a minimalistic bathroom. We also had our own little patio, protected by a hedge of plants. Everything was done with little color and lots of wood, making for a very cozy room.
Other highlights of our stay? Well, there was the sauna, which we definitely took advantage of both nights. We ended up going in later in the day, and had the whole sauna to ourselves. Afterward, we relaxed in the spa lounge area, reading our books while overlooking the Spree River outside. Also, the breakfast buffet was pretty top. The options for a vegan were semi-limited but not hopeless, whereas the offerings for a vegetarian were plentiful. The presentation was also great, and both mornings we spent a good two hours sitting in the breakfast room, enjoying the food, the views, and our books.
All in all, it was a really relaxing getaway, and one we both enjoyed. It helps that Lübben is a small little town, so though we spent a few hours exploring, we didn’t feel like we missed out on anything when we spent a lot of time lazing in bed or in the sauna. I’m relatively certain this won’t be the only time that we stay at the Strandhaus.
