To date, I’ve already shared a bit about our boat tour in Lübben and some of the nature we encountered, but I also wanted to share more about the town in general. It’s the capital of the Dahme-Spreewald region, and has a whopping 14,000 residents, so not much of a happening place. It’s also more conservative than I was expecting; there were a lot of campaign posters when we visited, and many of them were for right-wing, nationalistic parties and their members (AfD, NPD). No thank you.
In the summer, however, it can be pretty busy, since outdoor activities (like boat tours, hiking, bike riding, etc.) are the biggest draws for people from outside the region. There are also some semi-notable churches and a castle, but even the town square itself was pretty much closed down at 4pm on a Saturday. We also had a really difficult time finding a grocery store, but that just gave us an excuse to try the specialties, like Spreewald pickles, and potatoes with quark and flaxseed oil.
Suffice to say, we saw pretty much all of the city in the two days we were there. There are lots of beautiful buildings and quiet, tree-lined streets, with plenty of green area to explore, making it a serene and relaxing destination. But for someone who likes the fast-paced city life, I wouldn’t want to have stayed here much longer, and our Saturday-Monday stint was the perfect amount of time to see all there was to see.
