Berlin: Gendarmenmarkt Christmas Market

gendarmenmarkt 2012

Christmas Market season is here!

Yeah yeah, I know they can get a bit eh, and many of the markets are pretty much carbon copies of one another, but it’s still quite lovely to not only have an excuse to go outdoors in December, but also to get in the holiday spirit. Whether you like eating sausage, drinking Glühwein, checking out the crafts, or just bundling up tight and spending some time walking around, hitting up the markets is a great way to get in the holiday spirit.

Last year I went to a couple; this year I plan to try and do the same, although seeing some new ones might be a plus. In the meantime, here are some photos from last year’s visit to Gendarmenmarkt, which is one of the more lovely Christmas markets in the city. Naturally it’s much like any other market, with the same kinds of drinks and food throughout, but the entire feel is much more welcoming, even in spite of the commercial aspect of markets.

I went on my own during the day when the crowds were minimal and the entrance was free, which was a smart choice, since little else is worse than shuffling through a crowd when the ground is covered in snow and it’s below freezing.

For those who live in Berlin, here are some recommendations of the “best” markets, while a more comprehensive list can be found here.
