When I traveled to Sweden back in 2010, a friend back home asked me if I would stop by a tea shop in Gothenburg and get some of her favorite tea. Sweden is a special place for her and her husband, because that’s where they got engaged—when she was in Gothenburg, she visited Thehuset and bought some Kärlekste, a black tea with strawberries and little hearts. She had been rationing out her supply, so a new bag was just what she needed.
When we returned to Gothenburg again over the New Year, I knew I wanted to stop by and get more. Though she is still in California and I’m in Germany, I figured that mailing her some when she wasn’t expecting it would make it all the more special. So after a full afternoon of wandering through the city, we stopped by the shop as the dark was setting in. Since it was January, it was only 3 or 4 in the afternoon, but even with the sun setting, the glow of the store’s front window was warm and welcoming. Inside it was cramped, yet very cozy, as the walls were lined with boxes of loose-leaf tea, and the shelves filled with teacups, teapots, and brewing tools. I love the welcoming vibe here, and there’s always so much to take in, even in such a tiny space. I have never been much of a tea drinker (not like I drink coffee, anyway), but Thehuset sort of makes me want to change that.
