Sintra: Castle of the Moors

honeymoon in portugal

After we visited Sintra National Palace, the next stop on our list was the Castle of the Moors. Built in the 8th or 9th century, the castle now only consists of ruins, though there are efforts to protect it, as well as restore some areas. We had the option of walking to the castle (a bit of a trek) or simply taking the bus, so we forked over the €10 (which also covered the ride to the Pena National Palace, and a trip back into town when we were done) and rode up. Once there, we walked along a 400-meter path before arriving at the castle, but it was lush and green and offered a sneak peak of the views to come.

Upon entering the actual fortress, it was up to us to decide where to go. There are a few spots with signs that explain what part of the castle once was located there, but other than that, we had free reign to climb around and explore the pathways and walls. There was a lot of climbing, but we had tons of fun, and the cool breeze was an added bonus. While I wouldn’t necessarily say that the castle is amazing, if you like exploring and if you want some top-notch views, it’s definitely worth the visit.
