Lübben: Naturschutzgebiet

anniversary in spreewald

One of my favorite trips we took last year wasn’t to a location very far away—in fact, it was less than an hour away on the regional train. I planned a getaway for our anniversary, and while the actual weekend of was spent exploring Berlin’s Pfaueninsel, the weekend after was spent in Lübben, in the heart of the Spreewald region.

Lübben is a very small town but it’s situated in a bigger area that constitutes a UNESCO biosphere reserve. And though most of the waterways making up the area go all throughout the city, we also discovered a Naturschutzgebiet, a protected area with a trail that goes along the water and is home to a lot of plants and animals.

While we only walked about 15 minutes along the trail before turning back, it is a popular route for cyclists, with around 250 km of bike-riding trails in the Spreewald region, something I would love to ride part of in the future.
