Berlin: Vegan Tiger

If you know me, you know anything having to do with vegan food or tigers is right up my alley, so when a new cafe named Vegan Tiger opened up on Helmholtzplatz, of course I was down. Last month, I finally had the opportunity to check it out when meeting a friend for lunch.

The cafe is located next to BUCHBOX!, and the two are joined together, making it convenient to grab a bite to eat before or after perusing the books. Inside there are three tables, with room to seat about six, while outside there are maybe five or so additional tables, perfect for a sunny day. The day that we visited, however, was a little too nice and sunny, which means the wasps were out in droves. Luckily, the guys who own the place set us up with a table in the bookstore, since the others were already full, and it felt like our own private dining experience.

Now, the menu. We came for lunch, but I have to be honest: I was a little disappointed with selection. There’s a salad with tofu, bread with guacamole, Milchreis, and a daily special. When I inquired about the latter, however, I was told there was none. In the end, I got the salad while Cheryl got the bread. The presentation was nice and the food was good too, though it was a bit on the high end of the price spectrum, in my opinion.

As for the rest of what’s available, it’s more cafe fare, like coffee and teas, juices and smoothies, cakes and breakfast bowls. And that’s what I feel is the strong point of Vegan Tiger. Granted, I’ve not had these things yet, but after my visit it just seemed like less of a lunch spot and more of a place better suited for a morning snack, a drink with a friend, or a quick and healthy breakfast on your way to work. I don’t know about you, but a Matcha Latte Macchiato and Vegan Power Porridge sounds pretty good right about now…
