Berlin: Happy Baristas

happy baristas

In Germany, the land of non-existent customer service, a cafe with a name like Happy Baristas sounds like a joke… or perhaps a promise. So let’s cut to the chase here: the people working at Happy Baristas really are quite happy, and friendly, and kind.

This new spot (open since Oct. 10) is on a relatively busy street near Ostkreuz—a street that, to be honest, I think I’ve maybe only ridden my bike on. As such, I’ve never really paid attention to what was there or wasn’t, so my walk to Happy Baristas was a fun adventure. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but was happy to see there is a lot of outdoor seating, and the front has a lot of windows to draw in the natural light.

I wouldn’t say the inside is particularly remarkable, which is to say it fits the coffeeshop bill perfectly fine and works with the space there. It’s wide open, there’s lots of seating, it’s minimal in decor, and there’s an entire wall featuring art from El Bocho. What more could you ask for? Oh wait, you want sea foam green coffee cups? Yes, they have those too!

I took up a spot in the front corner with a black coffee and a slice of vegan carrot cake (complete with a surprisingly sweet lemon cream cheese frosting) and enjoyed reading, seeing the employees interact with all the customers, and watching the passersby outside. And at the end of my visit, I left with a bag of freshly ground coffee beans from Per Nordby, a satisfied stomach, and a smile on my face.
