On my trip to Riga last summer, I only had an abbreviated amount of time in the city, since I simply chose an eight-hour layover on my way home from Finland in order to explore a new country’s capital, albeit super briefly. But in order to do this, I had to opt for a 7am flight out of Helsinki, which put me in Riga an hour later without breakfast. Luckily, I’d done my research, and so after wandering through the Old Town an hour or two, I eventually made my way to MiiT. With a slogan advertising coffee, bikes, and food, how could I resist?
Though it was only around 10am when I entered, the day had already begun to warm considerably, so it was nice to enter MiiT, which is painted a calm and cool shade of bluish-gray. The decor is understated and clean, with a few splashes of color throughout. At the end of a long counter was a table with buffet offerings; depending on the time of day, there are menu items or buffet options. I went for the buffet, which was cheap and tasty. Naturally, it was well-suited for a vegetarian, but vegans have less of an option, though there still is food available. The coffee was also quite good.
As for the atmosphere, it’s hip without being pretentious. The people working were nice, though not overly friendly (from what I understand, Latvians keep to themselves much more). There was good music playing overhead and there is also free WiFi available. All in all, MiiT is a good spot to hang out at if you want tasty, inexpensive food and drinks, and if you’re seeking something a bit more alternative, yet still welcoming. Also, note the opening hours.
