On April 11 of this year, Markthalle Neun kicked off a weekly event known as Street Food Thursday. Already, the building has a daily cafe, a weekly market, and other one-off events, but a once-a-week event like this is something new. Considering that Berlin doesn’t really have much of a food truck culture, this is about as close as it comes.
Unfortunately, Thursdays are also the same nights that I have German class, and so it wasn’t until two weeks ago – on a night that class was canceled – that we eventually got around to trying it out.
Essentially, the event is in a large hall filled with aisles of different food, drink, and dessert venues. Some of them are permanent while others set up specifically for the event. Surprising to use was that approximately one-third of the booths had vegan offerings, which meant I certainly didn’t go hungry.
This time around, I opted for something healthy – mint carrots, pita chips, and beet hummus – along with a beer from Heidenpeters. Meanwhile, M. got the famed spätzle, which he enjoyed, along with a slice of cheesecake from Five Elephant, which he said is good but not mindblowing.
As for me, I still have three more weeks of German class, but once it ends, I can foresee going back to try out more booths.
My only complaint is that there is nowhere to sit. Maybe we should have aimed for earlier or later, as at 7, we ended up standing while eating. But considering how hot it is inside, perhaps going outside with the food is an even better option. Of course, we dealt with the heat in our own way: by getting ice cream from Tanne B on our way home…
