My experience as a freelancer with a partner who is not is that while I want to go out and do something on the weekends, more often than not, he wants to stay home and “relax,” which often means hanging around the house all day and maybe watching a movie together—something that is exacerbated when the weather is cold and dreary outside. I’m still a freelancer, but I’ve been working out of the house four days a week, plus an additional two days at home, which means that now I finally get it: the desire to do absolutely nothing but look at cat gifs on the Internet and read in bed all weekend long.
So no surprise when I say that this weekend was more of that. But we still did accomplish some things. Friday night, for example, I had enough energy to cook, so we made pumpkin soup for dinner. Saturday was devoted to finishing edits and a first draft of a submission that is a month overdue, but we still managed to find time to do our weekend grocery shopping. M. took the lead for dinner and made Kartoffeln mit Quark und Schnittlauch (potatoes with curds and chives, though I substitute the dairy with plain soy yogurt). I also baked some vegan danishes, and then spent the evening editing photos while watching “A Brony Tale.”
Early afternoon on Sunday was set aside to get stuff done, which means moving our smaller bookcases down into storage (since they were replaced with tall ones a few weeks back), giving the flat a deep clean with the vacuum, and tackling the years of build-up on the inside door of our oven. I wasn’t really all that successful with the final task; the usual vinegar and baking soda isn’t doing a thing, and neither is the oven cleaner we had. So not sure what route to take next.
But we didn’t let that bother us. Instead, we made some Thai red curry with tofu and eggplant for dinner, then watched “Santa Claws,” quite possibly the worst movie I have ever seen (but there were kittens!)… and rounded out the evening by reading in bed. Also, it seems like we’ve got quite the collection of leftovers in our fridge now, so I am looking forward to some no-fuss homemade food in the coming days.
