People from abroad always ask me about how easy it is to eat a cruelty-free diet here in Germany, and many are surprised when I insist that it’s not that hard. Of course, I always include a disclaimer that I live in Berlin, and since it’s the largest city in Germany (along with being one with a history that lends itself to being a bit more diverse, if not liberal), vegan food is just as prevalent as it is in San Francisco, or New York, even if that means you have to look a bit harder for it sometimes.
That said, I still get excited when new venues that are exclusively vegan open up; half of the food I eat outside of my home is what you might classify as “accidentally vegan.” And so when I learned about No Milk Today, aside from getting the song stuck in my head, I made a plan to visit it as soon as I could.
This past Friday was that day for me, and I enjoyed the cool yet sunny weather with a walk over to Graefekiez. The cafe was easy to find (clear signage) and has a little patio area out front. The inside is surprisingly large, with a bright, open front room, and a smaller, less airy room in the back.
What I found so great about No Milk Today was the selection, which consists of both sweet and savory foods, as well as plenty of drinks (coffee and tea, sodas and smoothies, beer and wine). And not only is it all vegan, but some options are also gluten-free (and clearly marked as such).
As for me, I ordered an americano (which was fine, though nothing to write home about) and a bagel (which came with lettuce, tomato, herb cream cheese, and tofu, and was delicious). While enjoying my snack, I also used the free WiFi to get some work done. All in all, a positive experience, and I will for sure be back.
