Kitchen: After

kitchen: after

Let me preface this post by saying that babies really are such a time suck. While you let some things go and never look back, it also feels like, more than ever, there aren’t enough hours in the day… which is why I am just now getting to the “after” photos of our kitchen almost two months late. For a refresher, Cynthia posted about kitchens earlier this year and I was inspired to finally show off our remodel (which took place in November/December 2012). Here’s the “before” stage, and here’s the “during” stage. Now it’s time to finally show off the end result.

But there is also another reason why these photos were delayed, and that’s because one night in November of last year, we came home to discover water on our ceiling and down our kitchen walls. Long story short, there was a problem with our upstairs neighbor’s bathtub and water pipes, and it ended up leaking water down below into our flat. Oh the joys of city living! So we called the Hausverwaltung (property managers). In December they sent someone out to check our walls, which were still wet. Then we went on vacation and things got busy, so he finally came again this year and discovered they were dry. So THEN we scheduled a two-day appointment for him to come and re-plaster the damaged parts and then paint, which was a whole ordeal of its own. And then we had to track down some CAPAROL to paint the backsplash to make it easy to clean, and then finally rehang our shelves and such.

Now I present you with the finished product:

So, there you have it. It may not be my dream kitchen, but I love it. So much passion and hard work went into creating it together, and the process has helped transform a dingy, unused room into a place I love to spend time cooking and being creative and hanging out with my little family.
