An afternoon in Bergmannkiez.

Sometimes we all need off days–the kind where we can either take a break from the demands of life or just do something nice for ourselves. Tom Haverford refers to these kinds of days as Treat Yo Self days and I love the idea behind this. Whether it’s buying myself a little something–be it a vegan cupcake, a new journal, or a different colour nailpolish–or taking the time to enjoy a new book, soak in the bathtub, or leisurely bike around, it’s important to do things which refresh and reinvigorate myself.

Today was one of those personal days, where instead of working or fulfilling any other obligation, I just spent some time outside. I started with a walk around Tempelhof Park, the old airport, with my pal Freddy, his lady and their snoozing newborn, Conrad, and some new friends on tour, Tom and Yair. After a couple hours, we all parted ways but I continued a few blocks down to Bergmannkiez, where my bike was parked.

But instead of getting my bike and riding home, I walked around the neighborhood, since it isn’t very often I am on “the other side” of Kreuzberg. I first headed to Viktoriapark, one of my favourite locations in city. It’s beautiful and serene, with a fantastic view from up top. It’s also where M. took me on our first, epic date, which lasted until 6 a.m. So needless to say, it’s a place I adore, although it really deserves an entry all its own.

After a walk around, I headed down Bergmannstraße and stopped off at Huong Que, a Vietnamese restaurant with an amazing vegan duck entree, and another one of our “spots.” It was super delicious and warm–perfect for a cold, overcast day. Finally, I did a quick stopover at Another Country, an English bookstore around the block. While I didn’t find any titles I was interested in, overall it was a relaxing couple hours by myself.
