I first visited Freckles back in early 2013, when it was about a year old, and I honestly wasn’t too impressed. Maybe it was an off day. Maybe they were still figuring some things out. Or maybe I was just disappointed because I inquired about getting a custom vegan wedding cake and no one ever got back to me. (Probably the latter, but I digress.)
But after some time–about a year, to be specific–I went back. It’s not that I wanted to wait a year, but I just don’t make it to SW61 very often. But it seems that in the amount of time that had passed, things have changed a bit, and for the better too.
The first thing you need to know about Freckles is that it’s a vegan cafe. When I first went there, it was mostly a small selection of cakes and other baked goods, but now it also has non-sweet food. I ended up getting a panino (yum!), but you can also get soup, salad, tofu, quiche, and whatever the daily special is. Additionally, there are plenty of homemade drinks and organic beverages, and you can even purchase things like vegan cheese from their cold case. But really, it’s about the sweets, like the mini cinnamon bread pieces. Or caramel cake. Or… you get the idea.
On the wall to the right of the counter is also a giant board with symbols and a key, so that you can decode when something is gluten-free, nut-free, soy-free, fructose-free, etc. Naturally it’s all vegan and lecker.
In regards to the interior, there is plenty of seating, including a light and airy front room, and a darker and bigger back room (there are also some spots outside if you want to people watch a bit). The atmosphere is a mix; on one visit it was calm and relaxing, while on another, there was a mini-Krabbelgrupe, complete with screeching babies. Either way, Freckles is a spot to hang out and chill (read: no WiFi). But no matter. When you’re surrounded by cakes and cookies and candy, you must be doing something right.
