Helsinki: Sibelius Monument

Since studying music at university in the early 2000s, the name Sibelius has been familiar to me. However, I associated the name with the song composition software I discovered while learning Midi. In fact, it wasn’t until planning my trip to Finland that I learned Jean Sibelius was a Finnish composer—and a famous one at that!

On the afternoon we visited the Sibelius Monument, we had to return a DVD of The Paperboy that we had rented the evening before, and it turns out that Sibelius Park is just around the corner from the video store. So naturally we went there after.

The park itself is beautiful—filled with birch trees and located next to the water. There were lots of geese (including fluffy little young ones) wandering through the grass and plenty of Japanese and biking tourist groups. As for the monument itself, it’s really quite lovely. I don’t think much of an explanation is needed for why it appears the way it does.
